About Otávio

Otávio Bueno is Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Miami, where he also serves as Cooper Senior Scholar in Arts and Sciences since May 2018. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Leeds in 1999, with a dissertation titled 'Philosophy of Mathematics: A Structural Empiricist View' supervised by Steven French. He previously obtained his M.A. in Philosophy from the University of São Paulo in 1996, with a dissertation on 'Constructive Empiricism: A Restatement and Defense,' and his B.A. in Philosophy from the same institution in 1993. Bueno's career includes Associate Professor (2004-2006) and Assistant Professor (2002-2004) positions at the University of South Carolina, Assistant Professor at California State University, Fresno (2000-2002), and teaching fellowships at the University of Leeds and University of York in 1999. He has held visiting positions at Princeton University (2004), University of São Paulo (2004), University of York, and University of Leeds. As Director of Graduate Studies at Miami (2007-2011), he has contributed to departmental leadership.

Bueno's research focuses on philosophy of science, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of logic, epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophy of art. He has authored Applying Mathematics: Immersion, Inference, Interpretation (Oxford University Press, 2018, with Steven French) and co-edited works such as A Companion to Latin American Philosophy (Wiley-Blackwell, 2010, with Susana Nuccetelli and Ofelia Schutte), New Waves in Philosophy of Mathematics (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009, with Øystein Linnebo), and Thinking about Science, Reflecting on Art (Routledge, 2017). Key publications include 'An inferential conception of the application of mathematics' (Noûs, 2011, with Mark Colyvan), 'Empirical adequacy: A partial structures approach' (Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A, 1997), and 'How theories represent' (British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, 2011, with Steven French). Serving as Editor-in-Chief of Synthese and Synthese Library, and subject editor for Oxford Bibliographies in philosophy of science, mathematics, and logic, Bueno has shaped the field. He has secured major grants, including National Science Foundation awards totaling over $2.8 million as co-PI for nanotechnology projects (2002-2010) and Arsht Ethics and Community Research Grants (2011-2013).
