Dr. Olivier Moréteau is Professor of Law and the first holder of the Russell B. Long Eminent Scholars Academic Chair at the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center, positions he has held since joining the institution in 2005. He currently serves as Director of the Center of Civil Law Studies, Assistant Dean for International Programs, and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Civil Law Studies. Previously, at Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 in France, he progressed from Assistant Professor (1982-1990) and Associate Professor (1990-1998) to Full Professor (Professeur agrégé, 1998-2005), while directing the Edouard Lambert Institute of Comparative Law (2000-2005), serving as Vice President for International Relations (1993-1999), and holding other administrative roles. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Minnesota (1992), Boston University (1993-1997, 1999-2000, 2002-2004), University of Melbourne (2002, 2004), University of Luxembourg (2014, 2015), Université de Nantes (2013, 2015), and Université Jean Moulin (2012-2018). Moréteau earned his academic degrees from Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3: Maîtrise en Droit (1977), D.E.A. de Droit Comparé (1978), D.E.A. de Droit Privé (1981), and Doctorat d'Etat en Droit summa cum laude (1990), the latter following research in Cambridge supported by a British Council scholarship.
His research interests encompass civil law, common law, comparative law, law and languages, legal translation, tort law, law of obligations, codification, and legal education. Key publications include books such as Comparative Legal History (O. Moréteau, A. Masferrer, K. Modeer eds., Edward Elgar, forthcoming 2019), Code civil de Louisiane, Édition bilingue (O. Moréteau ed., Société de législation comparée, 2017), Le juriste français entre ethnocentrisme et mondialisation (Dalloz, 2014), and Robert Anthony Pascal: A Priest of Right Order (O. Moréteau ed., Claitor’s, 2018); articles including "The Louisiana Civil Code in French: Translation and Retranslation" (9 Journal of Civil Law Studies 223, 2016), "De revolutionibus: The Place of the Civil Code in Louisiana and in the Legal Universe" (5 Journal of Civil Law Studies 31, 2012), and "Restating Tort Law: The American and European Styles" (with Michael D. Green, 3 Journal of European Tort Law 281, 2012). Awards and honors include Officier des Palmes Académiques (2016), Chevalier des Palmes Académiques (1998), John Ashby Hernandez III Memorial Francophone Leadership Award (2014), and two 1991 thesis prizes from the Centre Français de Droit Comparé and the Association Nationale des Docteurs en Droit. He is a member of the International Academy of Comparative Law, American Law Institute, World Society of Mixed Jurisdiction Jurists, President of Juris Diversitas, and serves on the Louisiana Bar Equivalency Panel and various editorial boards.
