About Olivia

Olivia Khoo is Professor of Film and Screen Studies and Head of Film, Screen and Culture in the Faculty of Arts at Monash University. Her academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Cultural Studies from the University of Melbourne (2003), a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of New South Wales (2009), a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Literature from the University of Western Australia (1996), and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from Monash University (2011). Khoo's research focuses on streaming technologies, media diversity, screen audiences, gender, sexuality and media, and Asian and Asian Australian cinema. She has held research fellowships at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore; University of California Humanities Research Institute; and National Library of Australia. A leader in her field, she co-founded the Asian Australian Studies Research Network (AASRN) in 2006 and serves as Co-Chair since 2022.

Khoo has authored seven books, including Asian Cinema: A Regional View (Edinburgh University Press, 2021), The Chinese Exotic: Modern Diasporic Femininity (Hong Kong University Press, 2007), and co-authored Transnational Australian Cinema: Ethics in the Asian Diasporas (Lexington, 2013). She has published over 60 refereed articles in journals such as Screen, Feminist Media Studies, Television and New Media, GLQ, Convergence, and Camera Obscura. Recipient of two Australian Research Council Discovery Project grants, she has supervised 22 PhD and MA students, earning a 2022 Special Commendation for the Dean’s Award for Postgraduate Research Supervision and four nominations for Supervisor of the Year. Currently, she is Co-Chair of the National Screen Diversity and Inclusion Network (2023-2025), member of the Australian Research Council College of Experts (2023-2027), Founding Series Editor for Gender, Sexualities and Cultures in Asia (Springer), and Founding Associate Editor for Studies in World Cinema: A Critical Journal (Brill).
