Nizar Habash is a Professor of Computer Science at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), where he serves as Program Head of Computer Science and Director of the Computational Approaches to Modeling Language (CAMeL) Lab, established in 2014. He is also a Global Network Professor of Computer Science at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Habash received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2003, along with an MS in Computer Science from the same university. He holds a BS in Computer Engineering and a BA in Linguistics and Languages from Old Dominion University. Prior to joining NYUAD in 2014, he was a research scientist at Columbia University's Center for Computational Learning Systems, contributing to advancements in computational learning.
Habash specializes in natural language processing and computational linguistics, with extensive research on machine translation, morphological analysis, syntactic analysis, and computational modeling of Arabic and its dialects. His work also covers artificial intelligence, Arabic language processing, text analytics, and dialogue systems through the CAMeL Lab. He has been principal investigator or co-investigator on over 30 research grants and authored more than 300 publications, including the influential book 'Introduction to Arabic Natural Language Processing' (2010). His significant contributions to language resources and human language technology evaluation have been recognized with the inaugural King Salman Academy for Arabic Language Award (2022), the ELRA Antonio Zampolli Prize (2024), and election as a Fellow of the Association for Computational Linguistics (2025). Habash's leadership in the CAMeL Lab drives innovative research and education, profoundly impacting the field of Arabic natural language processing globally.
