Nigel Sell is a Lecturer in the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Leicester, focusing on Actuarial Science. As a qualified life assurance actuary, he accumulated around 30 years of experience in the insurance industry before transitioning to academia and joining the University of Leicester as a lecturer in 2018. Sell is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (FIA), a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). These qualifications underpin his commitment to actuarial education, where he has served in various capacities with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, including as an examiner, external examiner, and counsellor for students who narrowly fail advanced actuarial subjects. His professional background provides students with practical insights, fostering their development into professionally trained, employer-ready graduates in actuarial science and related fields.
In addition to his lecturing duties, Sell holds the position of Admissions Tutor for the BSc Mathematics and Actuarial Science programme. He is the module convenor for statistics modules on the actuarial curriculum, taught to second-year undergraduates and MSc students within the School. These modules offer potential exemptions from the CS1 professional examination and include instruction in the R programming language to equip students with skills for handling large datasets. Sell also convenes the actuarial practice module under the MSc programme, which can lead to exemptions from the CP1 examination. Furthermore, he supervises a range of dissertations for year 3 undergraduates and postgraduate students across the programmes. Through these roles, Sell plays a pivotal part in delivering high-quality education aligned with professional actuarial standards.
