Dr. Nicola Gray Whiley is a Senior Lecturer in Food Science and Nutrition in the School of Medical, Molecular and Forensic Sciences at Murdoch University. She serves as Senior Lecturer in Phenomics specialising in diabetes and obesity at the Australian National Phenome Centre, part of the Health Futures Institute. Her work focuses on mass spectrometry method development and validation for metabolic phenotyping studies.
Nicola Gray Whiley obtained her PhD from King's College London, where her research involved liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry methods for detecting and quantifying doping agents in sport. Prior to joining the Australian National Phenome Centre in 2019, she was based at the University of Reading, studying the influence of diet and health on disease and developing analytical approaches to assess dietary intake using urine and blood samples. Her research specializations encompass advanced analytical chemistry platforms, particularly separation science and mass spectrometry, applied to large-scale phenotyping for population health studies, with expertise in diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, diet, and exercise. Key publications include 'A simultaneous exploratory and quantitative amino acid approach to the metabolic profiling of diabetes' (2021), 'Comprehensive Lipidomic Workflow for Multicohort Population Phenotyping Using Stable Isotope Dilution Targeted Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry' (2023), 'Plasma lipidomics reveal systemic changes persistent for up to 2 years following recovery from mild COVID-19' (2023), and 'Cross-Validation of Metabolic Phenotypes in SARS-CoV-2' (2024). She has delivered public talks such as 'Metabolic Phenotyping - What is it and What can it tell us?' at Pint of Science. Her contributions have earned over 1882 citations on Google Scholar. Awards and honors include the WA Near Miss Award for 2024-2025, WANMA Emerging Leaders funding, and recognition as a rising star in proteomics and metabolomics. She holds positions such as Vice-President of the Metabolomics Society Australia junior board and Chair of the WA Cardiovascular Research Alliance.
