Dr. Nicholas Christelis is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia Teaching & Research at Monash University. He is the Director and Co-Founder of Pain Specialists Australia. Christelis holds two specialist fellowships in pain medicine: FFPMANZCA from the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, received with a Merit Award, and FFPMRCA from the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in London. He undertook medical training in South Africa followed by specialist training in pain medicine and anaesthesia at the Imperial School of Anaesthesia in London, UK. His expertise includes all aspects of pain medicine, particularly interventional techniques such as nerve and joint blocks, epidural injections, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation, and other advanced neuromodulation procedures. He manages various chronic pain conditions, including spinal pain, neuropathic pain, lumbar pain and sciatica, neck, shoulder and arm pain, facial pains and headaches, and pelvic pain.
Prior to relocating to Melbourne in 2009, Christelis served as a pain consultant for two years in the pain management unit at The Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in London. In Australia, he holds appointments as Consultant in Pain Medicine, Head of Pain Service, and Anaesthetist at The Alfred Hospital, and acts as a Visiting Pain Specialist in multiple Melbourne hospitals. His research focuses on pain medicine, anaesthesia, and chronic pain, including an Alfred-Monash collaboration on translational pain research. He has published key works such as 'The impact of an innovative pharmacist-led inpatient opioid de-escalation intervention in post-operative orthopedic patients' (2020, Journal of Opioid Management), 'An enhanced recovery after surgery program for hip and knee arthroplasty' (2015, The Medical Journal of Australia), 'High volume local infiltration analgesia compared to peripheral nerve block for hip and knee arthroplasty—what is the evidence?' (2013, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care), 'Depression and chronic pain' (2012, The Medical Journal of Australia), and 'Frequency and use of pain assessment tools implemented in randomized controlled trials in the adult burns population: a systematic review' (2012, Burns). Christelis reviews for the British Journal of Anaesthesia and teaches pain medicine to patients and trainees.
