Nicholas Bloom is the William D. Eberle Professor of Economics at Stanford University’s Department of Economics and Professor, by courtesy, at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. As a leading scholar in Business & Economics, his research examines working from home, management practices, uncertainty shocks, productivity, innovation, and labor economics. He earned a BA in Economics from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge University in 1994, an MPhil in Economics from St Peter’s College, Oxford University in 1996, and a PhD in Economics from University College London in 2001. Bloom’s career includes early positions as Research Economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies (1996-2002), Business Tax Policy Advisor at HM Treasury (2001-2002), and Associate Consultant at McKinsey & Company (2002-2003). He served as Research Fellow at the London School of Economics’ Centre for Economic Performance (2003-2006) before joining Stanford as Assistant Professor in 2005, becoming Associate Professor in 2009 and Professor in 2012. He co-directs the Productivity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship program at the National Bureau of Economic Research and is a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
Bloom’s seminal publications include “Does Working from Home Work? Evidence from a Chinese Experiment” (Quarterly Journal of Economics, 2015), “The Impact of Uncertainty Shocks” (Econometrica, 2009), “Measuring and Explaining Management Practices Across Firms and Countries” (Quarterly Journal of Economics, 2007), “Hybrid Working from Home Improves Retention Without Damaging Performance” (Nature, 2024), and “Are Ideas Getting Harder to Find?” (American Economic Review, 2020). His work on management practices draws from surveys of over 10,000 firms worldwide and field experiments, influencing understandings of firm performance and national productivity. Recognized for his contributions, Bloom has received the Frisch Medal from the Econometric Society (2010), Guggenheim Fellowship (2022), Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2008), Kauffman Medal (2013), Bernácer Prize (2012), European Investment Bank Prize (2015), and National Science Foundation Career Award. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society, with research cited over 114,000 times.
