About Neeloy

Neeloy Ashraful Alam is an Associate Professor in the Sydney School of Public Health within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, where he has served since August 2011. He holds a PhD and an MSSc and works as a health social scientist specializing in qualitative and implementation research on maternal and child health and nutrition in South and Southeast Asia, as well as parts of Sub-Saharan Africa. His research covers countries including Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, the Pacific Islands such as Fiji, Malawi, and South Sudan. Alam utilizes qualitative methods to design interventions and evaluate behavior change and implementation outcomes in randomized controlled trials, with key focuses on gender, disability, and inclusion in health; nutrition literacy and safety nets; clean cooking and its effects on birth outcomes; nutrition-sensitive agriculture; women's livelihood and health; and peer-led behavior change for adolescents.

Prominent among his contributions is his involvement in the Poriborton cluster randomised controlled trial assessing the impact of liquefied petroleum gas cooking compared to traditional practices on perinatal and early neonatal mortality in rural Bangladesh. Other significant works include qualitative findings from the Shonjibon trial on women's participation in household decision-making in rural Bangladesh; the IIMAANJE cluster randomized controlled trial evaluating voice and text messaging interventions on hemoglobin and anemia in Senegal; studies on multidisciplinary teamwork and health system challenges in prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV services in Fiji's tertiary hospitals; and research on complementary feeding practices in rural and urban Indonesia. Alam also serves as Associate Editor for BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth and PLOS One. His scholarship has amassed over 2,275 citations on Google Scholar, underscoring his influence in global health, particularly gender equality, diversity, disability, inclusion, maternal health, and nutrition interventions.
