Professor Nazir Lone holds the Personal Chair of Critical Care and Epidemiology in the School of Population Health Sciences at the University of Edinburgh, where he is affiliated with the Usher Institute in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. He also serves as Honorary Consultant in Critical Care at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, NHS Lothian. Lone completed his academic training at the University of Edinburgh, earning a BSc (Hons) in Pathology in 1998, MBChB in 2000, MSc in Public Health Research in 2007, and PhD in 2013. His professional qualifications include MRCP (UK) in 2003, FFICM in 2014, FRCP Edin in 2016, and FHEA in 2020. Throughout his career, he has advanced from clinical roles to senior academic and leadership positions, including national roles in critical care research and audit.
Lone's research specializes in health services research and healthcare quality improvement for acutely ill patients, utilizing epidemiological methods, linked big data analyses, multimorbidity studies, and end-of-life care in acute and critical settings. Current projects encompass AI methods for multimorbidity to reduce adverse events (AIM-CISC project) and data analytics for multimorbidity recognition in emergency care, funded by Innovate UK. He has authored or co-authored over 180 research outputs, including key publications such as 'Characteristics of intensive care unit registries - findings from the Global Registry ICU Datasets (GRID) survey' (2026, Critical Care Science), 'Anaemia management with red blood cell transfusion to improve post-intensive care disability: protocol for the ABC post-ICU randomised controlled trial' (2025, Journal of the Intensive Care Society), and 'Long term mortality and major health care resource use following admission to Scottish ICUs' (award-winning research). In recognition of his contributions, he received the Intensive Care Foundation Research Gold Medal in 2016. Lone provides national leadership as Director for Research of the Intensive Care Society, former Chair (2019-2025) of the Scottish Intensive Care Society Audit Group (SICSAG) Steering Group, and current member. He contributes to education as Clinical Lead and Deputy Programme Director for the MSc in Data Science for Health and Social Care, course director for the Edinburgh Critical Care Research Methods Course, and supervisor for PhD, MD, MPH, and clinical fellows.
