Associate Professor Nadirsyah Hosen is at Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne, serving as Deputy Director of the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society. Internationally recognized for his expertise in Shari'a and Indonesian law, he holds two PhDs: a PhD in Law from the University of Wollongong in 2005 and a PhD in Islamic Law from the National University of Singapore in 2005. His academic qualifications also include an LLM in Comparative Law from Northern Territory University, an MA with Honours from the University of New England, a Graduate Diploma in Islamic Studies, and a Bachelor's degree from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. Professor Hosen's career includes positions as Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Monash University since 2015, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Wollongong from 2007 to 2009, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the TC Beirne School of Law, University of Queensland, visiting research fellow at the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies, Nanyang Technological University in 2006, and visiting research fellow at the Center for Integrative and Development Studies, University of the Philippines in 2008. He serves as Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Hasanuddin, Indonesia.
Professor Hosen's research specializations encompass problems and prospects of Indonesian law reform in constitution, politics, human rights, and anti-corruption; the role of Islam in modern states; law and religion; and reform of Shari’a, addressing historico-cultural, socio-cultural, and political aspects. Over two decades from 2002 to 2022, he has produced more than 70 publications, including books such as Shari’a and Constitutional Reform in Indonesia (Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, 2007), Human Rights, Politics and Corruption in Indonesia: A Critical Reflection on the Post Soeharto Era (Republic of Letters Publishing, 2010), co-editor of Islam in Southeast Asia in four volumes (Routledge, 2010), Modern Perspectives on Islamic Law co-written with Ann Black and Hossein Esmaeili (Edward Elgar, 2013 and 2015), and editor of Research Handbook on Islamic Law and Society (Edward Elgar). Notable articles include Religion and the Indonesian Constitution: A Recent Debate (2005, 286 citations), Behind the Scenes: Fatwas of Majelis Ulama Indonesia (1975–1998) (2004, 166 citations), and Online Fatwa in Indonesia: From Fatwa Shopping to Googling a Kiai (2008, 131 citations). He has authored Indonesian bestsellers like Tafsir al-Qur'an di Medsos (2019), Islam Yes, Khilafah No in two volumes (2018), Saring Sebelum Sharing (2019), and Ngaji Fikih. Professor Hosen serves on the editorial boards of The Asian Journal of Comparative Law (Cambridge University Press) and The Australian Journal of Asian Law (University of Melbourne). Known as Gus Nadir in Indonesia, he is a respected Muslim scholar and spiritual leader among Nahdlatul Ulama.
