Dr. Murphy Choy is a Lecturer at Curtin University in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Possessing over a decade of interdisciplinary experience in data analytics, machine learning, and higher education pedagogy, he earned a Doctorate in Business Analytics. His expertise centers on utilizing data analytics and machine learning to foster evidence-based teaching, curriculum design, and student-centered learning platforms. Choy teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses including Data Structures and Algorithms, Database Systems, Engineering Management, and related programming subjects, primarily at Curtin University's Perth campus and Singapore campus where he holds an adjunct appointment. His commitment to innovative experiential learning has earned him teaching awards.
Choy's research interests include AI ethics, generative AI, computational social science, misinformation detection, time series forecasting, scheduling optimization, customer profiling, and the effects of AI tools on student programming skills such as code generation, algorithm comprehension, and debugging. He has published extensively, with key works such as 'A Sentiment Analysis of Singapore Presidential Election 2011 Using Twitter Data with Census Correction' (2011), 'The Social Amplification of Haze-Related Risks on the Internet' (2018), 'Seeing Through Misinformation: A Framework for Identifying Fake Online News' (2018), 'Predicting Book Sales Trend Using Deep Learning Framework' (2020), 'Manpower Planning Using Heuristics' (2020), 'Airport Check-in Counters Assignment Using Predicted Passenger Load: A Case Study' (2021), and 'Enhancing Student Learning in Tertiary Education Through Simulation' (2025). His publications have received over 340 citations. Previously, he served as an Instructor and Adjunct Faculty at Singapore Management University's School of Information Systems. Choy has collaborated with Teesside University and the University of Stirling, delivered training on data literacy and ethical AI to universities, government agencies, and financial institutions, and serves on editorial review boards for academic journals and conferences.
