About Munro

Munro H. Proctor, M.D., M.P.H., served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University and was affiliated with the Section of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology at Boston University Medical Center. He earned a bachelor's degree from Trinity College in 1948 and an M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1952, followed by a Master's in Public Health from Boston University School of Public Health in 1992. Proctor's career encompassed clinical practice in cardiology, international health missions, and public health research and advocacy. He was recognized with the Distinguished Alumni Award from Boston University School of Public Health for his outstanding contributions to the field, particularly as co-founder of the Women’s Initiative for Health Education and Economic Development Cameroon.

Proctor's research focused on preventive cardiology, early childhood nutrition, physical activity, and cardiovascular health. Notable publications include 'Does early physical activity predict body fat change throughout adolescence?' published in Preventive Medicine in 2003, co-authored with Lynn L. Moore and others; 'Intake of Fruits, Vegetables, and Dairy Products in Early Childhood and Subsequent Blood Pressure Change,' in Epidemiology in 2005; 'Assault by Battery' in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1987; and contributions to the National Academies Press volume 'Control of Cardiovascular Diseases in Developing Countries.' He also published on topics such as the feasibility of using rural health workers for cause-of-death determination and earlier works on cardiac phonocardiograms and aortic stenosis in the 1950s. His work at Boston University included involvement with Physicians for Human Rights and facilitating overseas medical electives through a consortium of medical schools. Proctor volunteered extensively in Cameroon, advancing maternal and child health clinics and micro-credit programs for women's economic empowerment.
