Monique Cormier is an Associate Professor in the Monash University Faculty of Law, a position she has held since March 2022. Her academic journey includes a Doctor of Philosophy in Law from the University of Melbourne awarded in 2017, a Master of Laws from Columbia University in 2009, a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours from the University of Adelaide in 2006, and a Bachelor of International Studies from the University of Adelaide in 2002. Before joining Monash, she was a Senior Lecturer at the University of New England School of Law in New South Wales. She also worked as a Research Fellow and Sessional Lecturer at Melbourne Law School. Additionally, Cormier has been a Visiting Fellow at the Asian Law Institute of the National University of Singapore and a Visiting Researcher at Harvard Law School.
Cormier's research specializations lie in public international law, particularly jurisdiction and immunities, international criminal law and justice, nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, geopolitical security, and cybercrime. She is the author of the monograph The Jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court over Nationals of Non-States Parties, published by Cambridge University Press in 2020. Other key publications include 'Law, War and Letter Writing' in the European Journal of International Law (2024, co-authored with Madelaine Chiam and Anna Hood), ‘Can Australia Join the Nuclear Ban Treaty without Undermining ANZUS?’ in the Melbourne University Law Review (2020, co-authored with Anna Hood), 'All Options Are on the Table': Assessing the International Legality of Nuclear Threats (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, 2026, with Anna Hood), and 'Breaking the impasse: the case for establishing a no first nuclear threat norm' in the Journal on the Use of Force and International Law (2024, with Anna Hood). In 2025, she shared the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law article prize with Chiam and Hood. Cormier contributes to the field through leadership roles, serving as Treasurer on the Council of the Australian New Zealand Society of International Law, on the Executive Council of the Asian Society of International Law, and as a member of the Board of Experts for the Asia Pacific Journal of International Humanitarian Law.
