Professor Momen Atieh serves as Honorary Associate Professor at the Sir John Walsh Research Institute, Faculty of Dentistry, Health Sciences Division, University of Otago. He previously held the position of Senior Lecturer in Periodontology at the Faculty of Dentistry from 2016 to 2019 and Clinical Tutor at the same faculty from 2008 to 2014. During his time in Dunedin, he also worked as a Consultant Periodontist at Lumino The Dentists from 2014 to 2019. Atieh obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Jordan in 1995, Master of Science in Oral Surgery from the University of Manchester, UK, in 1998, Doctor of Philosophy in Oral Implantology from the University of Otago in 2011, and Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Periodontology from the University of Otago in 2014. He is a registered Periodontist in New Zealand and Dubai.
Atieh's research specializations encompass periodontology and implant dentistry, focusing on clinical trials, risk assessment, evidence-based care, alveolar ridge preservation, peri-implant diseases, and systematic reviews with meta-analyses. He collaborates with the Cochrane Oral Health Group as lead author and co-author of reviews on oral implantology, including "Interventions for replacing missing teeth: alveolar ridge preservation techniques for dental implant site development," and with the International Team for Implantology on multicenter randomized controlled trials conducted in the UAE and New Zealand. Notable publications include "Peri-Implantitis and Survival Outcomes of Tissue Level Versus Bone Level Dental Implants: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis" (2025), "Stability of tapered and parallel-walled dental implants: A systematic review and meta-analysis" (2018, cited by 96), "The socket shield technique for immediate implant placement: A systematic review and meta-analysis" (2021, cited by 45), "Outcome of supportive peri-implant therapy on the rates of peri-implant diseases and marginal bone loss: a systematic review and meta-analysis," and "Narrow Versus Standard Diameter Implants for Supporting Single Crown Restorations in the Posterior Jaw: A Randomised Controlled Trial" (2025). His scholarly output has accumulated over 4,300 citations, contributing significantly to advancements in dental implant stability, survival outcomes, and periodontal therapies. Atieh holds fellowships with the International Team for Implantology and memberships in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (MRACDS in Periodontology) and the American Academy of Periodontology.
