Dr Mohammed Junaid is a Senior Lecturer in Dental Public Health at the University of Western Australia (UWA) Dental School and the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia. He earned his BDS from Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University in 2010, MDS in Public Health Dentistry from Madras Medical College in 2014, Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2017, Diploma in Dental Public Health (DDPH) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2017—the first dental public health specialist from India to obtain this qualification—and a PhD from UWA in 2023 on the epidemiology of craniofacial anomalies and their association with intellectual disability in Western Australia. His PhD was supported by the Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship and the Stan and Jean Perron Top-Up Scholarship. Prior to his current role, Junaid served as a Research Fellow in UWA's School of Population and Global Health from 2022 to 2023, Data Manager and Research Officer at the Telethon Kids Institute from 2019 to 2023, and Senior Lecturer in Public Health Dentistry at Meenakshi Ammal Dental College and Hospital and Ragas Dental College and Hospital in Chennai, India, from 2014 to 2018. He also maintained an independent clinical dentistry practice in India from 2011 to 2018, worked in outreach programs in remote communities, and contributed to oral health promotion initiatives including school programs and precancer screening.
Junaid's research focuses on population oral health, craniofacial birth defects, linked administrative data analysis, health inequalities, rare diseases, child disability, Indigenous health, and infectious diseases epidemiology. He is a chief investigator on projects such as mental health service use among children with craniofacial anomalies, funded by the Australian Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Foundation, Australian Dental Research Foundation, and Perron Foundation, totaling AU$213,211.35. His scholarly output includes 31 Scopus/Web of Science-indexed publications in high-impact journals, such as 'Epidemiology of Rare Craniofacial Anomalies: Retrospective Population-Based Study' (Journal of Pediatrics, 2022), 'Association between craniofacial anomalies, intellectual disability and other neurodevelopmental impairments: Population-based study' (2022), 'Patterns, trends, and factors influencing hospitalizations for craniosynostosis in Western Australia' (2023), and 'The United Nations convention on rare diseases—A framework for research prioritization' (Frontiers in Public Health, 2025). Awards include Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (2025), Perron PhD Career Launching Award (AU$20,000), Early Career Researcher Award (2025), and Publication Excellence Award (2023). He coordinates units like DENT3008 Dental Public Health and Research Methodology, supervises postgraduate students, serves as Treasurer of the International Association of Dental Research ANZ WA Division, and leads the Clinics to Communities oral health education program for UWA dental students in Aboriginal schools and marginalized communities. Honorary appointments include research roles at Telethon Kids Institute and teaching at Sri Ramachandra Medical University, India.
