Makes learning interactive and engaging.
Mohamad Eid is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Engineering Division at New York University Abu Dhabi, where he serves as the Director of the Applied Interactive Multimedia Research Lab (AIMLab). He earned his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Ottawa in 2010. From June 2008 to April 2012, he held a teaching and research associate position at the University of Ottawa. Eid also holds a Global Network Associate Professor appointment in Electrical and Computer Engineering at NYU Tandon School of Engineering.
His research interests encompass haptics, multi-modal human-computer interaction, gaming, biofeedback technologies, EEG-based neurohaptics, affective haptics, and soft haptics. AIMLab projects under his direction include Neurohaptics for modeling neural responses to haptic stimuli, KATIB for haptic-guided handwriting training particularly for Arabic script, Haptogram for ultrasonic 3D tactile stimulation, Haptic Jacket for conveying emotions through vibrotactile patterns, Haptodont for virtual reality dental simulations, and Haptic Eye for thermal-based material sensing. Eid co-authored the book Haptics Technologies: Bringing Touch to Multimedia (Springer, 2011) and has produced over 140 conference and journal publications, including in IEEE Transactions on Haptics, ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing Communications and Applications, and IEEE Access. He holds five patents, such as Three Dimensional Tactile Feedback System (WO 2016007920 A1, 2016) and A Synchronous Interpersonal Haptic Communication System (US 8,294,557, 2012). Among his honors are best paper awards at ICBAE 2016, DS-RT 2008, and the ACM Multimedia 2009 Grand Challenge Most Entertaining Award. Eid serves as an editor for IEEE Transactions on Haptics and guest editor for haptics journals. He developed a haptic tool for Arabic handwriting instruction, tested in Abu Dhabi schools.
