Dr. Mitchell McEwan is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing at Macquarie University, part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He holds the position of Course Director for the Bachelor of Game Design and Development, Discipline Lead for the Game Design and Development major in the Bachelor of Information Technology, and Deputy Director of the Games User Research Lab. His academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy from Queensland University of Technology on the influence of naturally mapped control interfaces for video games on player experience and intuitive interaction, a Master of Information Technology in Games Design from the same university, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from Rutgers - The State University of New Jersey. Previously, McEwan served as a Lecturer and founding member of the Games Research and Interaction Design Lab at Queensland University of Technology and as Co-Founder and Director of TBD Game Company, developers of the iOS game Endless Runner X.
McEwan's research specializations include virtual reality and natural user interfaces, player experience, serious games and applied gaming, games ethics, accessibility, diversity and inclusion, user experience and human-computer interaction in games, intuitive interaction in games, and game design and production. He has contributed to projects such as 'Control and User Interface Design Factors for the Metaverse – Supporting Meaningful Social Interactions in VR,' 'Cybersecurity ethics training simulations for values-based decision-making,' 'Welcoming Trans and Gender Diverse Players,' 'Social Eye Gaze in Virtual Agents,' and 'Videogames for Vision Science.' An active member of the CHI PLAY community, he received the Best Paper award in 2014 and an Honorable Mention in 2020, and has held roles including Proceedings Chair (2021-2023) and Technical Program Chair (2024-2025). McEwan chairs the School of Computing's Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging committee and serves on the steering committee of the national IDEATE program.
