About Minyon

Dr Minyon Avent serves as an Antimicrobial Stewardship pharmacist at the School of Public Health, The University of Queensland, and as a Consultant Clinical Research Pharmacist at the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR). She is also an Adjunct Senior Lecturer affiliated with the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences. Avent holds a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, United States, a Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Science (Honours), Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist certification, Fellow of the Society of Hospital Pharmacists (FSHP), and Advanced Practice Pharmacist credentials. Her career encompasses extensive experience in clinical pharmacy, with a focus on infectious diseases and the appropriate use of antibiotics in tertiary healthcare institutions, rural and regional areas, and general practice settings.

Avent's research specializations include antimicrobial stewardship programs, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic optimisation of antibiotics, and strategies to reduce antibiotic prescribing and resistance. She has authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and conference papers, including 'Adult penicillin allergy programmes in Australian hospitals: a practical guide from the National Antibiotic Allergy Network' (2024), 'Reducing antibiotic prescribing in general practice in Australia: a cluster randomised controlled trial of a multimodal intervention' (2023), 'Improving paediatric antimicrobial stewardship in remote and regional Queensland hospitals: development and qualitative evaluation of a tailored intervention for intravenous-to-oral antibiotic switching' (2022), 'Implementation of a novel antimicrobial stewardship strategy for rural facilities utilising telehealth' (2021), 'Where to from here? Identifying and prioritising future directions for addressing drug-resistant infection in Australia' (2021), 'Oral or intravenous antibiotics?' She has contributed to funded projects such as 'An innovative Antimicrobial Stewardship Program for children in remote and regional areas: optimising antibiotic use through early intravenous-to-oral conversion' (2018-2020, The Children's Hospital Foundation), 'Randomised controlled study of an intense short course of optimised combination therapy versus conventional therapy for the management of Gram-negative bacteraemia' (2014-2018, Merck Sharp & Dohme), and 'General Practitioner Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme Study (GAPS)' (2015-2016).
