Great Professor!
Associate Professor Lih-Ming Wong, commonly known as Ming Wong, is a urologist with a sub-specialty in uro-oncology affiliated with the Department of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne. He graduated with an MBBS from the University of Melbourne in 2001 and completed his urology training in Victoria in 2009. Wong advanced his skills through international fellowships, including one year at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, UK, focusing on robotic radical prostatectomy, cystectomy, and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, followed by a two-year Society of Urological Oncology Fellowship at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Canada, managing complex uro-oncological cases. He holds additional qualifications from the University of Melbourne: Postgraduate Diploma of Surgical Anatomy, Masters of Surgery, and Doctor of Medical Science. Currently, he serves as Associate Professor and Senior Clinical Lecturer, supervising postgraduate students, mentoring undergraduates, and providing clinical services at St Vincent's Health Melbourne (public and private), Epworth Freemasons, Eastern Health, and rural locations such as Shepparton since 2013.
Wong's research centers on urological cancers, particularly the role of diagnostic imaging like PSMA-PET/CT and MRI in prostate cancer management. As principal investigator at St Vincent's Hospital, he leads several multicentre prospective trials, including those evaluating PSMA-PET/CT for risk stratification prior to radical prostatectomy. He presented PEDAL trial results at the 2022 European Urology Meeting, earning the best resident presentation prize. His publications include first-author work such as 'Impact of 5-alpha Reductase Inhibitors on Men Followed by Active Surveillance for Prostate Cancer' (2013, European Urology) and contributions to 'Fluorine-18-labelled Prostate-specific Membrane Antigen Positron Emission Tomography in Men with Previous Prostatectomy' (2024, European Urology Oncology), alongside papers in the Journal of Urology, British Journal of Cancer, and The Lancet. Awards include the national Keith Kirkland prize for best trainee research and a team Excellence in Cancer Care Award in 2016. Wong founded the St Vincent’s Academy of Surgeons, established a public-private robotic surgery program in 2019, and secured Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia funding for a dedicated nurse in 2020.
