Michelle D’Abundo, PhD, MSH, CHES, served as an Associate Professor in Public Health Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) after holding the position of Assistant Professor of Community Health in the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences. She earned her B.S. from American University, M.S. from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and Ph.D. in Adult Education from the University of Georgia. Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), D’Abundo’s career prior to UNCW included a faculty appointment at Salisbury University in 2004 in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Human Performance.
Her research specializations include quality of life assessments, physical activity and sitting behaviors among college students, health education, and wellness promotion. Key publications during her UNCW tenure are 'The Reliability and Construct Validity of American College Students’ Responses to the WHOQOL-BREF' (2011, International Electronic Journal of Health Education, with M.M. Orsini, J.J. Milroy, C.L. Sidman), which validated the WHO quality of life instrument for U.S. undergraduates; 'Segmenting the College Educated Generation Y Health and Wellness Traveler' (2014, Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing, with N.M. Hritz, C.L. Sidman), analyzing wellness travel market segments; and 'Sitting Behavior and Physical Activity of College Students' (Department of Interprofessional Health Sciences and Health Administration). She contributed to peer review for journals including Women’s Health Issues and has presented on topics such as happiness strategies in UNCW courses (2014). D’Abundo’s work has impacted health science by providing reliable tools for measuring student well-being and informing interventions for physical activity and lifestyle behaviors in academic settings.
