Michael X. Repka, M.D., M.B.A., serves as the David L. Guyton, M.D., and Feduniak Family Professor of Ophthalmology and Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He holds the positions of Vice Chair for Clinical Practice and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus at the Wilmer Eye Institute. Dr. Repka obtained his B.A. in Chemistry and Biology with Highest Honors from the University of Delaware in 1975, his M.D. magna cum laude from Thomas Jefferson University in 1979, and his M.B.A. with Honors from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School in 2010. Following an internship in internal medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital in 1983 and fellowships in neuro-ophthalmology and pediatric ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute in 1984. He joined the Johns Hopkins faculty as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in 1985, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1990 and Professor in 1997, and has held his current endowed professorship since 2010.
Dr. Repka specializes in pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, retinopathy of prematurity, and pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, with clinical interests in amblyopia management using alternatives to patching, strabismus surgery with botulinum toxin and adjustable sutures, and pediatric cataract surgery. He chaired the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group from 1997 to 2009, leading over 20 clinical trials, and served as Clinical Center Principal Investigator for the Cryotherapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity trial. His highly cited publications include 'Incidence and early course of retinopathy of prematurity' (Ophthalmology, 1991), 'A randomized trial of patching regimens for treatment of moderate amblyopia in children' (Archives of Ophthalmology, 2003), 'Randomized trial of treatment of amblyopia in children aged 7 to 17 years' (Archives of Ophthalmology, 2005), and 'Prevalence of amblyopia and strabismus in white and African American children aged 6 through 71 months' (Ophthalmology, 2009). Dr. Repka is Associate Editor of Ophthalmology journal, has served on editorial boards including Journal of AAPOS and British Journal of Ophthalmology, and chaired the FDA Dermatologic and Ophthalmic Drugs Advisory Committee. He is President of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for the 2025 term, past President of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and has received the AAO Life Achievement Award (2011), AAPOS Lifetime Achievement Award (2008), and multiple honor awards from both organizations, along with the Frank Costenbader and Eugene Helveston Lectures.
