About Michael

Professor Michael Henderson serves as Professor of Digital Futures in the Faculty of Education at Monash University and Director of the Hub for Educational Design and Innovation (HEDI). A world expert in digital education, his research focuses on learning design and the effective integration of digital technologies in teaching and learning across early childhood, schools, higher education, and professional contexts. Key areas include assessment and feedback practices, creative risk taking, AI applications in education, online safety, and instructional media design. He has secured funding from ARC Discovery and Linkage projects, the Spencer Foundation, and Office for Learning and Teaching grants, such as Feedback for Learning: Closing the Assessment Loop and What Works and Why: Understanding Successful Technology-Enabled Learning. Henderson has edited influential books including The Impact of Feedback in Higher Education: Improving Assessment Outcomes for Learners (2019) and Teaching and Digital Technologies: Big Issues and Critical Questions (2015). With over 200 research outputs, his work on assessment feedback and AI has significantly influenced research, practice, policy, and national standards.

In his career at Monash, Henderson has led course creation and redesign, student-focused initiatives enhancing teaching quality and satisfaction, and served in strategic university roles. He was Lead Editor of the Australasian Journal of Educational Technology from 2014 to 2020, Co-leader of the UNESCO-sponsored EDUsummIT Creativity and Digital Technologies working group (2016-2021), and Expert Advisor to the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) since 2016 on digital online delivery. Recognized as a national Field Leader in Education research by The Australian in 2020 and 2024, he received a national ALTC Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in 2010 and several other teaching awards. Henderson teaches courses on learning design and educational technologies, delivers keynotes at international conferences, and contributes to boards and committees in educational organizations.
