Dr. Tan Meng Yoe is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Communications Studies and the Deputy Head of School (Education) at the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. He holds a PhD in Arts from Monash University Malaysia, awarded in 2014 for his thesis "The Digital Church: Urban Malaysian Christian Experiences in Cyberspace," supported by a Monash University Postgraduate Scholarship. Additional qualifications include a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from Monash University Malaysia (2017) and a Bachelor of Communication (Honours) (2008), for which he received the Monash University Honours Scholarship. His career trajectory at Monash University Malaysia encompasses tutor positions (2010-2013), lecturer in Communication (2014-present, promoted to Senior Lecturer), course coordinator and director for the Master of Communications and Media Studies programme (2015-2022), and current leadership as Deputy Head of School (Education). Prior roles include Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader at IACT College (2013-2014 and 2007-2010).
Tan Meng Yoe's research focuses on digital religion, particularly Malaysian Christianity and online communities, alongside media studies, political communication in Malaysia, health communication, and education research. His investigations examine internet practices' impact on religious and political communication, spiritual authenticity in cyberspace, inter- and intra-religious dialogue on social media, and Christian experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Notable publications include the monograph Malaysian Christians Online: Faith, Experience, and Social Engagement (Springer, 2020); co-edited volume Forged in Fire: Living the Christian Life in the Post-Pandemic World (Christian Institute for Theological Engagement, 2025); journal article "Authenticity in Online Religion: An Actor-Network Approach" (International Journal of Actor-Network Theory and Technological Innovation, 2016); and book chapter "Facebook and the Mediatization of Religion: Inter-/Intrareligious Dialogue in Malaysia" (Routledge, 2019). He has obtained several grants, such as School of Arts and Social Sciences Seed Grants and Monash Education Academy funding. Tan Meng Yoe serves as Research Fellow in Religion and New Media at the Christian Institute of Theological Engagement (CHRISTE) since 2021 and was a finalist in teaching excellence awards.
