Mei Ying Boon is Associate Professor in Optometry and Vision Science and Discipline Lead in Optometry and Vision Science in the Faculty of Health at the University of Canberra. She earned a Bachelor of Optometry (Honours) and a PhD in the electrophysiological and psychophysical development of colour vision from the University of New South Wales, Sydney. Her postdoctoral research at Queensland University of Technology focused on preventing injuries in older people with visual impairment and low vision. Boon leads initiatives such as the UC Hospital Eyecare Project and the VARIS project, which enable comprehensive vision assessments, referrals, investigations, and support in rehabilitation settings, including services at UC Hospital and the UC Eye Clinic.
Her research specializations include normal and abnormal development of vision in children and older adults, encompassing amblyopia, type 1 diabetes, colour vision, and binocular vision anomalies; low vision and vision impairment rehabilitation, including vision related to stroke and falls; functional and environmental vision; vision in diabetes and prediabetes; vision and reading; and binocular vision assessment and therapies. Key publications include 'Does using a bioptic telescope improve visual recognition of the on-road environment?' (2024, Optometry and Vision Science), 'The Effects of Refractive Imbalance on Binocular Vision Status, Reading Performance, and Vision-Related Reading Difficulty Symptoms in Expert Readers' (2025, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science), 'LED railway signal detection rather than recognition is affected by both refractive and non-refractive blur' (2026, Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics), and 'Apps for people with vision impairment: An international review of practitioner suggestions and app availability in 2025' (2026, Clinical and Experimental Optometry). With over 1,000 citations across 60 research outputs, her work impacts vision rehabilitation and accessibility. Boon is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology in Vision, International Colour Vision Society, and CIE Australia. She served as Director of the Optics and Radiometry Laboratory from 2016 to 2020 and contributes to Standards Australia committees MS-024 and SF-006, as well as ISO expert panels on optical and electronic low vision aids and virtual and augmented reality.
