Mehmet Tosun is the Barbara Smith Campbell Distinguished Professor of Nevada Tax Policy and Professor of Economics in the Business & Economics faculty at the University of Nevada, Reno College of Business. He serves as Chief International Officer, Director of the Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship, Director of International Programs, and Interim Director of the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies. Tosun earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in 2001, M.A. in Economics from Boston University in 1994, and B.A. in Economics from Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1993. Before joining UNR in 2006 as Assistant Professor, he held positions at West Virginia University as Research Assistant Professor and Director of the West Virginia Public Finance Program from 2001 to 2006. At UNR, he advanced to Associate Professor in 2010, full Professor in 2016, and chaired the Department of Economics from 2013 to 2019.
Tosun's research specializations include public finance, particularly tax policy, regional economics, and the economics of population and demography. He has received major awards such as the Graduate Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Business in 2019, Global Engagement Award from the University in 2018, Dean’s Research Professorship in 2013, Beta Gamma Sigma Best Researcher of the Year in 2009, and the Ibn Khaldun Prize from the Middle East Economic Association in 2005. As a Research Fellow at the Institute of Labor Economics, Economic Research Forum, Global Labor Organization, and Affiliate Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute of Population Ageing, he contributes editorially as Associate Editor of Socio-Economic Planning Sciences and on boards for Migration Letters and others. His key publications include the textbook Principles of Microeconomics, Second Edition (2018, co-authored with Pavel Yakovlev and Antony Davies), and peer-reviewed papers such as “The Impact of Legalized Casino Gambling on Crime” (Regional Science and Urban Economics, 2017, with Mark W. Nichols), “Assessing Activist Fiscal Policy in Advanced and Emerging Market Economies using Real-Time Data” (Oxford Economic Papers, 2019, with Tigran Poghosyan), and “Economic Growth and Tax Components: An Analysis of Tax Changes in OECD” (Applied Economics, 2005). His scholarship has garnered over 1,500 citations on Google Scholar and influenced policy discussions.
