Great Professor!
Professor Megan Munsie is a Professor of Ethics, Education and Policy in Stem Cell Science in the School of Biomedical Sciences and Melbourne Medical School at the University of Melbourne, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. She earned a science degree from Queensland University of Technology, a Masters of Reproductive Science from Monash University, and a PhD from Monash University focused on mouse embryonic stem cells and pluripotency. Early in her career, she worked for ten years as a clinical embryologist in Australian IVF clinics during the late 1980s and entered stem cell research in the mid-1990s, contributing to therapeutic cloning studies including a 2001 proof-of-concept paper on somatic cell nuclear transfer. Since 2007, she has led engagement, ethics, and policy programs for major Australian Government-funded stem cell science initiatives, such as Stem Cells Australia. In 2019, she was promoted to full professor and appointed Deputy Director of the Centre for Stem Cell Systems in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience. She heads the Munsie laboratory on ethical, legal, and social implications of stem cell research within the School of Biomedical Sciences.
Megan Munsie is Group Leader of the Stem Cell Ethics and Policy group at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, heads the preparedness program (PREPARE theme) for the international reNEW Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Medicine, and co-leads the University of Melbourne Collaborative for Better Health and Regulation. Her research investigates ethical, legal, and social issues in stem cell science and regenerative medicine, including stakeholder views on experimental treatments, community expectations of clinical trials, ethics of organoids and embryo models, regulatory responses to unproven interventions, and professional standards for translation into therapies. She received the 2018 International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) Public Service Award for contributions to public service in stem cell research and was elected to the ISSCR Board of Directors in 2023 for a three-year term, later advancing to the Executive Committee. As immediate past President of the Australasian Society for Stem Cell Research, she has held leadership roles for over ten years and serves on advisory committees for ISSCR and International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy. Key publications include 'Marketing of unproven stem cell–based interventions: A call to action' (Science Translational Medicine, 2017), 'The Australian Stem Cell Handbook' (2015), and recent works such as 'Three-Dimensional Models of Implantation Using Human Stem Cells: Scientific Insights and Broader Considerations' (Biomolecules, 2025). Her empirical research has informed policy reforms, professional guidelines, and educational resources including ISSCR's 'A Closer Look at Stem Cells' website, with extensive media engagement and public lectures.
