Matt Griggs serves as Programme Lead for the MSc Expedition and Marine Medicine and Lecturer for the MSc Global Health in the Peninsula Medical School, Faculty of Health at the University of Plymouth. His career began in the media before transitioning to healthcare in 2004, where he works as a paramedic in the NHS—a position he maintains today. Entering academia in 2010 as a Practice Placement Educator and Visiting Lecturer on the BSc Paramedic Practice programme at the University of Brighton, he joined the University of Plymouth paramedic team in 2015. By 2018, he assumed the role of Programme Lead for the BSc Paramedic Science, overseeing curriculum updates and navigating the programme through the COVID-19 challenges.
Griggs earned his MSc in Hazards and Disaster Management from Kingston University in 2013. His academic interests encompass global health issues, hazards and disaster management, remote and rural medicine, health and humanitarian emergencies, expedition and marine medicine, and diving medicine. He leads modules such as Remote and Rural Medicine and Health and Humanitarian Emergencies within the MSc Global Health programme and contributes to teaching clinical decision making on the BSc Paramedic Science. Since 2021, he has co-led the Global Health Collaborative, contributed to redesigning the Global Health programme modules, and participated in developing new MSc pathways in Remote and Expedition Medicine and Diving Medicine. Beyond his university roles, Griggs joined UK-Med's emergency medical team in 2013, volunteered as a health worker following the 2015 Nepal earthquake, and facilitated a partnership between the University of Plymouth and Siddhastali Rural Community Hospital. This collaboration aims to deliver shared training for hospital staff and UK healthcare students, alongside sustainable first-aid training programmes for remote Nepalese communities.
