Dr. Martin Hopkins is a nursing academic with a distinguished career at Murdoch University, spanning 2009 to 2023. He held progressive roles including Lecturer in Nursing and Deputy Academic Chair (Undergraduate) from 2009 to 2010 and 2015 to 2018, and Senior Lecturer Nursing and Academic Chair (Undergraduate) in the Discipline of Nursing from 2018 to 2023, within the School of Health Professions. He currently serves as Adjunct Senior Lecturer in Nursing at Murdoch University. Prior to his academic appointments, Hopkins worked in clinical nursing in the United Kingdom, including as Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department at Leicester Royal Infirmary from 2002 to 2007, Senior Clinical Nurse there from 2000 to 2002, and various staff nurse positions at Kettering General Hospital and Cardiff Royal Infirmary from 1996 to 2000.
His academic qualifications comprise a Doctor of Philosophy from Murdoch University in 2016 on building resilience in nursing students coping with aggression and violence at work, a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from England in 2009, a Master of Science in Advanced Nursing Practice from England in 2007, and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from England in 2000. Hopkins specializes in nurse education, nurse workforce dynamics, aggression and violence in clinical settings, resilience, and technology in nursing education. Key publications include 'Aggression and violence in healthcare and its impact on nursing students: A narrative review of the literature' (Hopkins, Fetherston, & Morrison, 2018, Nurse Education Today), 'The mental health impact of COVID-19 on pre-registration nursing students' (Usher et al., 2023, Journal of Advanced Nursing), and his doctoral thesis 'Building resilience in nursing students: Coping with aggression and violence at work' (2015). He has supervised masters theses on topics such as emergency department inter-hospital transfers and nursing student perceptions.
