Mark Melatos is Associate Professor of Economics in the School of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, at the University of Sydney, where he obtained his BEc (Hons) and PhD in 2002. His career at the University includes previous roles as Associate Dean (Postgraduate Coursework) and Sub-Dean (Academic Appeals and Progression) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, as well as inaugural Degree Director of the Executive Master of Arts and Social Sciences. He has held visiting positions at the OECD, Copenhagen Business School, York University, University of Copenhagen, and universities in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland. Melatos received the Vice Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2020. He served as Chief Examiner for the New South Wales Higher School Certificate economics examination from 2008 to 2018 and currently serves on the New South Wales Education Standards Authority’s Higher School Certificate Standards Committee and the Reserve Bank of Australia’s Educators Advisory Panel.
Melatos specializes in international trade theory and policy, with publications in leading journals such as the European Economic Review, The World Economy, Journal of International Money and Finance, PLOS One, and Energy Reports. Notable works include 'Endogenous trade bloc formation in an asymmetric world' (European Economic Review, 2007), 'Preferential trade agreements as insurance' (Journal of International Money and Finance, 2024), 'Are Customs Unions Really So Scarce?' (The Economic Record, 2018), 'How Can Uncertainty Affect the Choice of Trade Agreements?' (The Economic Record, 2016), 'The Trade and Welfare Impacts of Australian Quarantine Policies: The Case of Pigmeat' (The World Economy, 2012), and 'Common External Tariff Choice in Core Customs Unions' (Review of International Economics, 2009). He has secured research grants from the Australian Research Council, Danish Research Council, and European Commission. Melatos has consulted for the OECD’s Trade and Agriculture Directorate, advised Australian Government inquiries into international trade and investment, and delivered invited research seminars at the World Trade Organization, OECD, London School of Economics, and Iowa State University.
