About Mark

Mark Copelovitch is a Professor of Political Science and Public Affairs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, holding joint appointments in the Department of Political Science and the Robert M. La Follette School of Public Affairs. He currently serves as Director of European Studies and previously held the Jean Monnet Chair in the European Union and the Global Economy (2022–2025). Copelovitch earned a B.A. in Political Science from Yale University in 1997 (magna cum laude, with Distinction), an A.M. in Political Science from Harvard University in 2003, and a Ph.D. in Government from Harvard in 2005. His academic career includes positions as Assistant Professor (2006–2013), Associate Professor (2013–2018), and Professor (2018–present) at UW–Madison, a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton University (2005–2006), a visiting scholarship at the Hertie School of Governance (2013–2014), and a visiting researcher position at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center (2023–2024).

His research focuses on international political economy, international organizations, global financial governance, the politics of international finance, financial crises, and European integration. Key publications include the books The International Monetary Fund in the Global Economy: Banks, Bonds, and Bailouts (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and Banks on the Brink: Global Capital, Securities Markets, and the Political Roots of Financial Crises (with David A. Singer, Cambridge University Press, 2020), as well as articles in International Organization, Comparative Political Studies, American Journal of Political Science, and Review of International Organizations. Among his honors are the American Academy in Berlin Prize Fellowship (Spring 2024), Vilas Associate Award (2017–2019), Herb Kohl Public Service Research Fellowship (2021–2022), and the Robert Noxon Toppan Prize for best dissertation (2006). Copelovitch has contributed to public discourse through policy analyses in outlets like The Washington Post and serves as Chair of the European Union Studies Association Executive Committee (2025–2027) and on the editorial board of the American Political Science Review.
