Margaret Hokom is a Professor of English at Fairmont State University in the Department of Language and Literature within the College of Liberal Arts, a position she has held since 2001. She earned her B.A. in English from the University of Puget Sound and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her academic career at Fairmont State has been marked by steady advancement from Associate Professor to full Professor, alongside significant leadership roles including President of the Faculty Senate, Chair of the Faculty Senate Personnel Committee, and election as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Guardians of the West Fork Watershed. Hokom has received several honors, including a 2009 Fairmont State University Foundation grant supporting her research on Willa Cather novels and the influence of Greco-Roman traditions, the 2009-2010 Award for Excellence in Academic Advising, and recognition for 25 years of service in 2022. She has also been honored with the campus Award for Excellence in Academic Advising, which contributed to a national NACADA recognition.
Hokom's research focuses on American literature, particularly Willa Cather, as evidenced by her publication 'Pompeii and the House of the Tragic Poet in A Lost Lady' in Cather Studies Volume 10 by the University of Nebraska Press. She has presented scholarly work at events such as the Western Literature Association conference on Roman conceptions in literature. In addition to her research, she actively mentors students, guiding projects on authors like John Steinbeck and Willa Cather, and contributes to student scholarship celebrations. Her influence extends to curriculum development and academic advising, earning praise for supporting student success. Hokom has been acknowledged in major anthologies like The Norton Anthology of World Literature for her contributions.
