Dr Mardé Helbig is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Information and Communication Technology at Griffith University, located on the Gold Coast campus. She recently held the position of Deputy Director of the Griffith Sciences Partnership Office. Prior to joining Griffith University, she served as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pretoria from August 2014 to October 2019.
Helbig's academic interests center on computational intelligence, specifically the application of these techniques to solve dynamic multi-objective optimisation problems. Her research has significantly contributed to the field, with her Google Scholar profile reporting over 1,253 citations. Notable publications include "Performance measures for dynamic multi-objective optimisation algorithms" published in Information Sciences (2013), "Benchmarks for dynamic multiobjective optimisation" (2013), "Heterogeneous dynamic vector evaluated particle swarm optimisation for dynamic multi-objective optimisation" (2014), "Key challenges and future directions of dynamic multi-objective optimisation" (2016), "Progressive gradient walk for neural network fitness landscape analysis" (2018), "Loss Surface Modality of Feed-Forward Neural Network Architectures" (2020), "Cybersecurity Maturity Model Capability in Aviation and Railway Industries" (2022), and "Empirical Loss Landscape Analysis of Neural Network Activation Functions" (2023). Additionally, she co-edited the book "Robot Intelligence Technology and Applications 7: Results from the 10th International Conference on Robot Intelligence Technology and Applications" (Springer, 2023).
Throughout her career, Helbig has received prestigious awards, including the University of Pretoria Exceptional Young Researcher Award in 2017, the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) Emerging Researcher Award in 2019, and membership in the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS) in 2017. She was also awarded a Y1 rating by South Africa's National Research Foundation.
In her professional roles, Helbig serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation and is involved in various IEEE Computational Intelligence Society activities, including the Women in CI & Collaborative Expansion and Engagement Sub-Committee. At Griffith University, she acts as an HDR Advocate for the Griffith Sciences group on the Gold Coast campus and supervises PhD candidates researching topics such as using adaptive behaviour found in nature to solve dynamic multi-objective optimisation problems.
