Marcelle Nascimento, DDS, MS, PhD, serves as Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Director of Cariology, and Assistant Dean for Clinical Research at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, positions she has held since joining the institution in May 2024. She earned her DDS, MS, and PhD degrees in Cariology from the University of Campinas in Brazil. Prior to her appointment at UB, Nascimento was a tenured Professor and Director of the Dental Clinical Research Unit at the University of Florida College of Dentistry from 2007 to 2024, where she taught Cariology and Operative Dentistry and developed preclinical and clinical courses. Her career has been marked by a commitment to advancing dental education and fostering engaging learning environments for predoctoral and graduate students.

Nascimento's research focuses on cariology, oral microbiology, dentin hypersensitivity, erosive tooth wear, dental microbiome, arginine deiminase expression in oral streptococci, and restorative materials for caries lesions. She has received funding from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and industry partners to conduct clinical and translational studies. Notable grants under her leadership include an observational study on erosive tooth wear and dentin hypersensitivity risk factors (2025-2026) and a comparative evaluation of toothbrush bristle designs for plaque reduction and abrasion prevention (2025-2028). Key publications encompass 'Evidence-based clinical practice guideline on restorative treatments for caries lesions: A report from the American Dental Association' (2023, Journal of the American Dental Association), 'Heterogeneous lineage-specific arginine deiminase expression within dental microbiome species' (2024, Microbiology Spectrum), and 'Nonrestorative treatments for caries: systematic review and network meta-analysis' (2019, Journal of Dental Research), contributing to her over 50 research outputs and national and international recognition in the field. Nascimento holds leadership roles such as President of the American Academy of Cariology (2024-2025), past President of the Cariology Research Group of the International Association for Dental Research, Chair and Councilor of the American Dental Education Association Cariology Section, and Chair of the Seal Subcommittee of the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs.
