Holding a Ph.D. from Mahatma Gandhi University, Dr. Mohan's academic career has focused on environmental sciences, with extensive research into pollution dynamics, including mercury contamination, microplastic pollution in urban water systems, perchlorate in drinking water near rocket facilities, and groundwater quality assessments. His work extends to Arctic environmental changes, sediment analysis in estuaries like Cochin and Ashtamudi, earthworm diversity in biosphere reserves, and sand mining impacts.
Dr. Mohan has participated in multiple Indian Arctic Expeditions since 2013, leading the team in 2014, contributing to studies on climate shifts via mineral magnetism and pollutant distribution in Arctic fjords. He has authored or co-authored over 130 publications, including 99 international journal papers such as 'Perchlorate in drinking water around rocket manufacturing and testing facilities and firework manufacturing sites in Kerala, India' (2017), 'Mercuric reductase gene (merA) activity in a mercury resistant bacterium' (2021), 'Comprehensive evaluation of groundwater quality and health risk assessment' (2025), and 'Water and sediment quality of Ashtamudi estuary, a Ramsar site, southwest coast of India' (2010). His research garners over 2,600 citations on Google Scholar, reflecting substantial impact in environmental monitoring, bioremediation, and ecosystem vulnerability.
