Maha H. Hussain, MBChB, is the Genevieve E. Teuton Professor of Medicine and a professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. As Deputy Director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, she is responsible for the development and oversight of clinical research across the center and Northwestern Medicine, including coordination of cancer-related clinical research services. She chairs the Governance Committee of the Clinical Research Office, serves on the Clinical Cancer Center Executive Council and the Lurie Cancer Center Executive Committee, and provides leadership for clinical faculty recruitment. Additionally, she oversees the Translational Research in Solid Tumors and Hematological Malignancies Programs. Prior to joining Northwestern in September 2016, Dr. Hussain served as Associate Director for Clinical Research at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, where she joined the faculty in 2002. Her career in medicine spans extensive experience in the design and conduct of clinical trials, including federally sponsored multicenter investigator-initiated studies.
Dr. Hussain specializes in genitourinary cancers within the field of medicine, focusing on the development of novel therapeutics that integrate scientific advances into clinical trials for prostate and bladder cancer. She earned her MBChB from the University of Baghdad College of Medicine in 1980, completed her residency in internal medicine at Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University in 1986, and finished her fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1989. Board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology, she holds fellowships from the American College of Physicians (FACP) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO). Dr. Hussain has guided research in advanced prostate cancer that has led to changes in standards of care. She co-chairs the Prostate Cancer Subcommittee of the Genitourinary Cancer Committee of SWOG, has chaired the Integration Panel of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command Prostate Cancer Research Program, and has served on and chaired the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Oncology Drug Advisory Committee. She has been elected to the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and received support from the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO.
