M’bare N’gom, Ph.D., serves as Dean of the James H. Gilliam, Jr. College of Liberal Arts and Professor of Spanish in the Department of World Languages and International Studies at Morgan State University, where he has held faculty positions since 1992, advancing from part-time instructor to associate professor, department chairperson, and director of multiple programs including African Studies (since 2001), the Master of Arts in International Studies (since 2005), and Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Prior to Morgan State, he was Associate Professor of Romance Languages at Coppin State College from 1989 to 1992 and taught languages in Spain from 1980 to 1989 at institutions such as the Spanish Air Force Language School and Marshall Institute. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Spanish (Iberian and Ibero-American Studies) from the Institut d’Etudes Hispaniques, Université de Paris-Sorbonne Paris IV in 1987; a D.E.A. in Linguistics, Iberian and Latin-American Studies from the same institution in 1983; a Master of Arts in Spanish and Latin American Studies from Université de Dakar in 1982; and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, Iberian and Latin American Studies from Université de Dakar in 1977. He also completed studies in International Studies and Diplomacy at Escuela Diplomática de España.
Dr. N’gom’s research specializations encompass North African literature and studies in Spanish (Western Sahara, Morocco, Tunisia), African literature in Spanish, Afro-Hispanic American literature, race, class, and ethnicity in Latin American literature and film, translation theory and practice in French and Spanish, and Francophone studies including African cinema and literature. Key publications include edited books such as La reconstrucción de la memoria y de la identidad nacional en la literatura hispanoafricana (2004), “Escribir” la identidad: creación cultural y negritud en el Perú (2008), Nueva Antología de la literatura de Guinea Ecuatorial (2012), Palabra Abierta: Entrevistas con los escritores africanos hispanos (2013), and Antología de la literatura afroperuana (2016); and articles like “Transterritoriality and identity in North African literature written in Spanish” (2019) and “Dislocación, memoria histórica e identidad en La travesía, de Francisco Abeso” (2014). He has served as guest editor for journals including Afro-Hispanic Review (2000) and Middle-Atlantic Writers Association Review (2013). Notable honors include Honorary Professor of Literature and Translation from Universidad Ricardo Palma (2023), Fulbright Lecturing/Research Grant to Peru (2002), multiple Outstanding Educator awards from Morgan State, and Excellence in Scholarship awards. As a visiting professor at institutions worldwide and leader of Fulbright-Hays projects, he has significantly influenced global studies and Hispanic-African literary scholarship.
