Lucy D. Mastrandrea, MD, PhD, serves as Professor of Pediatrics and Division Chief of Endocrinology/Diabetes in the Department of Pediatrics at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Manhattan College in 1990, graduating summa cum laude. Mastrandrea obtained her MD and PhD in Biochemistry from the University at Buffalo in 1999, followed by a pediatric internship in 2000, residency in Pediatrics in 2001, and fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology in 2005, all at the University at Buffalo.
Her academic career at the University at Buffalo began in 2005 as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, advancing to Associate Professor from 2013 to 2022 and full Professor since 2022. She has held the position of Division Chief of Endocrinology/Diabetes at UBMD Pediatrics since 2017 and Medical Director of the Diabetes Center at Oishei Children’s Hospital since 2017. Other key appointments include Associate Fellowship Program Director for Endocrinology/Diabetes since 2011, Adjunct Research Assistant Professor in Pharmacology and Toxicology since 2008, Attending Physician in Endocrinology/Diabetes at Oishei Children’s Hospital since 2004, and Associate Program Director of the MD/PhD program. Mastrandrea’s research focuses on pediatric endocrinology, including pathophysiology of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, obesity and weight management, growth hormone deficiency, late endocrine effects of childhood cancer, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. She has published extensively in high-impact journals, including a 2022 New England Journal of Medicine study on once-weekly semaglutide in adolescents with obesity showing a mean 16.1% BMI reduction, a 2023 Lancet review on Type 1 diabetes, and a 2023 Cell Reports Medicine article on polyamine biosynthesis inhibition preserving beta-cell function in Type 1 diabetes. Her work has secured funding from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, American Diabetes Association, and pharmaceutical companies, improving clinical outcomes through innovative interventions.
Recognized for her leadership and contributions, Mastrandrea was elected to the American Pediatric Society in 2025. She has received Castle Connolly Top Doctors awards annually from 2016 to 2024, Exceptional Women in Medicine (2019-2022), Pediatric Endocrine Society Leadership Advantage Award of Accomplishment (2019), and Society for Pediatric Research membership (2012), among others.
