Lisa Charmer is a Lecturer in Midwifery in the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University. She holds a Diploma of Nursing from the University of Salford, a Graduate Diploma in Midwifery from the University of Technology Sydney, and a Master of Midwifery Studies from the University of Newcastle. As a registered midwife and nurse, Lisa possesses over 20 years of clinical experience in roles such as Management and Clinical Midwifery Educator, spanning tertiary, rural, and remote settings in all areas of midwifery. She has driven policy and guideline reviews to promote evidence-based practice and advocates for women’s and families’ empowerment in maternity care decisions. Her contributions align with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
In academia, Lisa is the Course Coordinator for the Bachelor of Midwifery program and delivers teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Her research interests include midwifery education, the mental well-being of maternity care practitioners, rural and remote maternity services, and the influence of personal trauma from birthing experiences on practitioners' care provision, decision-making, and well-being. Currently pursuing a PhD under the supervision of Professor Julie Jomeen and Dr Elaine Jefford, her topic is 'Maternity care practitioners experience of personal trauma during the birthing journey and the impact this has on their future care provision, decision making, and ongoing well-being'. Key publications feature 'Primary Birth Trauma in Australian Midwives: A Correlational Study' (2024, International Journal of Childbirth, co-authored with Marianne Wallis, Elaine Jefford, Julie Jomeen) and 'A scoping review of maternity care providers experience of primary trauma within their childbirthing experience' (2021, Midwifery, co-authored with Elaine Jefford, Julie Jomeen). Lisa is actively involved with the Australian College of Midwives, serving on multiple committees including the editorial committee for Australian Midwifery News, and contributes nationally to midwifery practice and education.
