Dr. Linda Portsmouth is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Population Health within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University. She holds a PhD, Master of Health Communication (MHlthComm), Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion (PGradDipHlthProm), Bachelor of Arts (BA), and Bachelor of Applied Science (BAppSc). Her research specializations encompass health promotion, health communication, social marketing, and public health interventions targeting issues such as recreational drowning prevention, smoke-free policies, alcohol consumption among university students, adolescent physical activity and obesity, and maternal mental health in low-resource settings. Portsmouth teaches units including PUBH3002 Professional Practice in Public Health in the Bachelor of Science (Health Promotion) program and supervises Honours, Masters, and PhD students in health promotion research.
Throughout her career at Curtin University, Portsmouth has made significant contributions to teaching excellence and public health research. In 2011, she received the Curtin University Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award for Teaching Excellence. In 2025, the Curtin BSc Health Promotion team, including Portsmouth, won the Excellence and Innovation in Teaching Award. Her key publications include 'Recreational drowning prevention interventions for adults, 1990–2012: a review' (Journal of Community Health, 2015), 'No smoking here: examining reasons for noncompliance with a smoke-free policy in a large university' (Nicotine & Tobacco Research, 2014), 'Moving forward: a cross sectional baseline study of staff and student attitudes towards a totally smoke free university campus' (BMC Public Health, 2013), 'Consequences of low risk and hazardous alcohol consumption among university students in Australia and implications for health promotion interventions' (Open Journal of Preventive Medicine, 2015), 'Postnatal depression and its social-cultural influences among adolescent mothers: A cross sectional study' (PLOS Global Public Health, 2023), and 'Physical Activity Knowledge, Attitude, and Behaviours Among Adolescents in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Prior to and During COVID-19 Restrictions' (Journal of Obesity, 2022). With over 340 citations across 27 publications, her work informs evidence-based strategies for behavior change in educational and community settings, including collaborations on projects like HB2 and participation in conferences such as the 47th APACPH Conference.
