Dr. Mathias Felipe de Lima Santos is a Lecturer in Multiplatform Journalism and Honorary Lecturer in the School of Communication, Society and Culture within the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University. He holds a PhD in Communication from the University of Navarra, Spain, awarded in October 2021, and a Master's degree in Digital Communication Leadership focusing on Media Innovation. Currently, he serves as the Master of Research (MRes) Convenor for the school and teaches units in Data Journalism at the master's level and Journalism Research at the undergraduate level. His career encompasses previous postdoctoral research at the University of Amsterdam, research associate roles at the Digital Media and Society Observatory and the Federal University of São Paulo, and contributions to projects examining platform influences and journalism innovations.
De Lima Santos's research centers on the intersection of media, technology, and society, encompassing data journalism, digital news business models, societal impacts of artificial intelligence, disinformation dynamics including COVID-19 fake news, and collaborative journalism in the Global South. His scholarship is ranked first worldwide in Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Journalism for 2020-2025 by SciVal. Since 2021, he has produced over 37 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, garnering more than 1000 citations with an h-index of 17, including nearly 20 top-tier Q1 publications. Key works include 'Artificial intelligence in news media: Current perceptions and future outlook' (2021, 440 citations), 'Fake news agenda in the era of COVID-19: Identifying trends through fact-checking content' (2021, 182 citations), 'Guiding the way: A comprehensive examination of AI guidelines in global media' (2025, 100 citations), 'Data journalism beyond technological determinism' (2021, 86 citations), and 'A challenging future for the Latin American news media industry' (2021). He has partnered with media entities such as Al Jazeera, BBC, La Nación, and ProPublica, earned journalism awards, and influenced policy through disinformation research. De Lima Santos serves on the editorial board of Digital Journalism, as Secretary for the International Communication Association’s Journalism Studies Division, and has been named a rising star in Communication and Cultural Studies by The Australian and the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
