About Lesley

Emeritus Professor Lesley Barclay AO, PhD, is an educational leader, health services researcher, and systems reformer whose work at the University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine and Health has improved maternal child health services in urban, rural, remote, and Indigenous communities in Australia and internationally. As Professor Emerita in the School of Medicine, affiliated with the University Centre for Rural Health and the Rural Clinical School (Northern Rivers), she previously held the position of Professor of Rural Health and Director of the University Centre for Rural Health North Coast from 2009. Beginning her career as a midwife, she transitioned into research and academia, serving as foundation Professor of Health Services Development at Charles Darwin University, where she co-directed the Graduate School of Health Practice. For nearly 20 years, she provided technical advice to governments, AusAID, World Bank, and WHO on primary health care, maternal and infant health, and health worker education systems in Asia, Melanesia, and the Pacific Islands. She led NHMRC Centres of Clinical Excellence as Chief Investigator, focusing on maternity services enhancements.

Barclay has directed over 30 research projects, including NHMRC- and ARC-funded initiatives on Indigenous birthing systems, rural birth indices, and maternity services in China, securing eight major grants in the last decade. She has supervised more than 30 PhD theses to completion, with 15 graduates appointed to professorial positions in midwifery and maternal child health. Her publications encompass three books, including the edited volume "Birth Models That Work" (2009), 25 refereed journal articles, and 15 major government reports in recent years, alongside seminal papers such as "Constructing Fatherhood: Discourses and Experiences" (1997, 1128 citations), "Defining Social Support in Context: A Necessary Step in Improving Research, Intervention, and Practice" (2004, 616 citations), "Becoming a Mother: An Analysis of Women's Experience of Early Motherhood" (1997, 590 citations), and "‘Big Build’: Hidden Depression in Men" (2005, 559 citations). Awards include the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2004 for contributions to child health, professional, and international development; Distinguished Fellow of the Australian College of Midwives; and designation as a Samoan Chief for 20 years of work in Samoa. She served two terms on the NHMRC Council, was an inaugural ministerial appointee to the Australian Council for Safety and Quality in Health Care, chaired the National Rural Health Alliance, and held board positions in local health districts and Medicare Locals.
