Dr Leenika Wijeratne is a consultant psychiatrist specializing in child and adolescent mental health at the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), part of the Child and Adolescent Health Service, WA Health, at Perth Children’s Hospital. Her clinical work includes conducting multi-disciplinary assessments for young patients presenting with self-harm, suicidal ideation, and emotional dysregulation. She diagnoses conditions such as situational crisis, mixed disorder of conduct and emotion, and emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD). Dr Wijeratne prescribes and manages medications like sertraline for depression and suicidal ideation, and quetiapine for sleep difficulties and mood stabilization. She emphasizes short hospital admissions for risk containment to avoid dependency and promote community reintegration through psychotherapy, noting risks of peer contagion in ward settings.
In her research contributions, Dr Wijeratne co-authored the 2026 publication 'Temporal trends in youth mental health: Insights and predictions from 20 years of Child and Adolescent Health Service data' in the Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, which models historical data from 2004 to 2024 to examine increasing prevalence of mental health disorders in children and young people. She has served as a reviewer for Annals of General Psychiatry in 2013 and 2014. Additionally, she offers assessments for neurodevelopmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD, and held the role of Public Relations Officer for the Sri Lanka Medical Association in 2013.
