About Lawrie

Dr. Lawrie Brown serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering and Information Technology at UNSW Canberra at the Australian Defence Force Academy. Following his retirement in 2016, he maintains an active involvement in academia. His research specializations encompass communications and computer systems security, safe mobile code execution, cryptography, and the application of Proxy Certificates for client authentication. Earlier in his career, he contributed to the design and implementation of private key block ciphers, notably the LOKI family of encryption algorithms. Additionally, he focused on developing safe mobile code environments utilizing the functional programming language Erlang. These efforts reflect his longstanding commitment to enhancing security in computing systems.

Brown co-authored the influential textbook Computer Security: Principles and Practice with William Stallings, first published by Pearson Education in August 2007 and reaching its fourth edition in 2017. His scholarly output includes significant journal articles such as 'A New Dawn for the Dark Knight: Securing BATMAN' (Journal of Information Security Research, 2011, with Anne GB, Espen GG, and Jaatun MG) and 'Extending Erlang for Safe Mobile Code Execution' (Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 2005, with Sahlin D). Key conference papers feature 'Automated processes for evaluating the realism of high-interaction honeyfiles' (European Conference on Information Warfare and Security, 2015, with Whitham B and Turner T), 'BatCave: Adding Security to the BATMAN Protocol' (International Conference on Digital Information Management, 2011, with Bowitz AG, Graarud EG, and Jaatun MG), 'Analysis of the Periodical Payment Framework using Restricted Proxy Certificates' (Australasian Computer Science Conference, 2010, with Goldman G), and 'Cultural and Social Aspects of Security and Privacy – The Critical Elements of Trusted Online Service' (International Conference on Usability and Internationalization, 2007, with Lewis EJ and Yang Y). Other notable works include contributions to trust-profiling frameworks like the W3 Trust Model (2006, 2002, 2001) and early papers on encryption algorithms and Erlang security (2000, 1999, 1998). In 2010, he conducted a sabbatical at the Department of Telematics, NTNU, Norway, as a NordSecMob scholar supported by the European Commission under the Erasmus Mundus program.
