Lauren Selden serves as Professor of Jewelry/Metals in the School of Art at Stephen F. Austin State University, a position she has held since her promotion in 2018, following roles as Associate Professor (2014-2018) and Assistant Professor (2008-2014). She earned her Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University in 2008, specializing in metalworking, jewelry, and sculpture, and her Bachelor of Fine Arts summa cum laude from Murray State University in 2005. At SFASU, Selden teaches a range of courses including Introduction to Art Metals/Jewelry, Advanced Art Metals/Jewelry Design, 3D Design, undergraduate and graduate seminars, professional practices, and MFA thesis exhibitions. Earlier, she instructed 3D Design and Introduction to Metalworking at Arizona State University and conducted workshops at institutions such as Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts.
Selden's research and creative practice center on thematic commentaries and narratives exploring inner emotions arising from interpersonal relationships, shaped by daily activities and personal interactions. Her extensive exhibition record includes solo shows such as Echoes of Resilience at the Discoveroom Gallery, Museum of East Texas (2025), The Space Between at Brazosport College Art Gallery (2024), Invasive Species at the University of North Texas (2023), and The Town that Knew Me When at Purdue University (2021). She has participated in numerous national and international juried and invitational exhibitions, with outdoor sculptures displayed publicly across U.S. cities and two acquired by the San Marcos Arts Commission permanent collection. Residencies include Fiskars AiR in Finland (2022), Baer Art Center in Iceland (2018), and featured artist at the 2do Festival de Arte Nueve in Chihuahua, Mexico. Awards encompass the SFASU Foundation Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching (2017), College of Fine Arts Teaching Excellence Award (2012), and Faculty Development Leaves (2024, 2015). Her artwork has been published in Metalsmith Magazine, 500 Metal Vessels, and 500 Wedding Rings (Lark Books). Selden has presented workshops and lectures at conferences, universities, and art centers in the United States, Brazil, Germany, France, Iceland, and Mexico.
