Laura Winn is a Senior Instructor in Communications at Florida Atlantic University, serving in the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies within the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters since 2009. Prior to her appointment at FAU, she held the position of Assistant Professor at Wayne State University in Detroit. Dr. Winn's academic background includes a Ph.D. in Interpersonal Communication from the University of Georgia-Athens, a Master of Social Work from Florida Atlantic University, a Master's degree in Child and Family Development from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Winn's teaching interests span communication theory and methodology, gender, culture, and interpersonal communication. She teaches courses such as COM 2053: Introduction to Communication and Civic Life and COM 3405: Human Communication Theory. Her research interests center on interpersonal communication, with particular attention to gender, social support, and civic engagement within public forums. She has extensive experience conducting research in lower-income communities, including being selected as a graduate student to run a project funded by Head Start. In 2004, Dr. Winn was selected to participate in a forum on Women and Leadership at Oxford University. She has also held prominent leadership roles in the Florida Communication Association, serving as Vice President from 2017 to 2018 and President from 2018 to 2019. Dr. Winn's areas of expertise include communication theory and methodology, gender and culture studies, and interpersonal communication, aligning with her contributions to the Communications discipline.
