Laura Nguyen is Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Letters and Professor at the University of North Georgia on the Oconee campus. She holds a Ph.D. in 20th Century American Literature, Gender, and Renaissance Poetry from Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge in 2005, an M.A. in English from Morehead State University in 1997, and a B.A. in English from Morehead State University in 1995. Her teaching portfolio encompasses foundational and advanced English courses, including ENGL 0989: Foundations for English Composition, ENGL 1101: English Composition I and its honors section, ENGL 1102: English Composition II and honors, ENGL 2112: World Literature II, ENGL 2150: Literature and Film, and ENGL 2230: Intermediate Composition.
Nguyen's research specializations include gender studies, 20th century literature, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), and peace studies. Her scholarly contributions feature peer-reviewed articles and book chapters such as “Scholarly Personal Narrative in the SoTL Tent” co-authored with Mary Carney in Teaching & Learning Inquiry (2017), “Would I lie to you?: Subversive Lying in the Fiction of Herbst and Paretsky” in Studies in Popular Culture (2015), “Professional Development Amid Change: Fostering Academic Excellence and Faculty Productivity at Teaching-Intensive Universities” with Mary Carney and Tom Cooper in The Journal of Faculty Development (2016), “Moving Pictures and Words: Multimodal Projects in College Composition” with Karen Redding in Innovations and Inquiry Pedagogies in Practice (2017), a chapter on English Composition course redesign in Gateways to Completion (2021), and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor? A Learning Community Experiment” in Putting It All Together (2023). She has earned the University of North Georgia’s Distinguished Scholar for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Innovative Teaching Award, Presidential Professional Development Award, and served as a Governor’s Teaching Fellow. Nguyen co-directs UNG’s Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Faculty Academy and contributes as a reviewer for journals like Teaching & Learning Inquiry and the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
