About Larry V.

Larry V. Hedges is a Board of Trustees Professor of Statistics and Data Science and Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University, holding additional appointments as Professor of Psychology, Professor of Medical Social Sciences, Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research, and Co-Director of the STEPP Center. In the field of Social Science, he is recognized as a national leader in educational statistics and evaluation. He joined Northwestern in 2005, following his tenure as the Stella M. Rowley Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago from 1994 to 2005, where he also chaired the Department of Education from 1988 to 1991, and earlier as Assistant Professor at Michigan State University from 1980 to 1984. Hedges earned his Ph.D. in Mathematical Methods in Educational Research and M.A. in Statistics from Stanford University in 1980, and his B.A. in Mathematics magna cum laude from the University of California, San Diego in 1978.

Hedges's research centers on the development and application of statistical methods for meta-analysis, effect sizes, replication studies, social experiments, and policy research, particularly in education, across social, medical, and biological sciences. He has authored or co-authored eight books, including Statistical Methods for Meta-Analysis (1985, with I. Olkin), The Handbook of Research Synthesis (1994, 2009, 2019 editions, edited with H. Cooper et al.), and Introduction to Meta-Analysis (2009, 2021, with M. Borenstein et al.), along with numerous influential journal articles. His contributions have profoundly impacted evidence-based research methodologies. Hedges has received major honors, including the 2018 Yidan Prize for Education Research, 2023 José Vasconcelos World Award for Education, fellowships from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Statistical Association, American Psychological Association, American Educational Research Association, and membership in the National Academy of Education. He served as Chair of the National Board for Education Sciences, President of the Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness, Editor of the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics (1998-2001), and Co-Editor of the Journal of Research on Educational Effectiveness (2007-2012).
