Larry A. Allen, MD, MHS, serves as Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine on the Anschutz Medical Campus, a position he has held since 2022. A Colorado native, he earned his BA from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1994, MD from Harvard Medical School in 2001, and Master of Health Sciences from Duke University in 2008. He completed internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital from 2001 to 2004 and cardiology fellowship, including advanced training in heart failure and transplant cardiology, at Duke University Hospital in 2008. Board-certified in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology and general cardiology, Dr. Allen specializes in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology. His career emphasizes patient-centered care, clinical operations, and health policy research, including roles as Chair of the Cardiovascular Clinical Outcomes Governance Group for UCHealth and Co-Director of the Colorado Program for Patient Centered Decisions.
Dr. Allen's research centers on outcomes research, risk prediction, readmissions, transitions of care, shared decision-making, and equitable delivery of evidence-based heart failure treatments. He has led prominent multicenter clinical trials, including the PCORI-funded DECIDE-LVAD trial on decision support for left ventricular assist devices, the AHA-funded EPIC-HF trial on patient engagement in medication management, and the ongoing PCORI-funded I-I-CAPTAIN trial across multiple health systems. His influential publications include "Forecasting the impact of heart failure in the United States: a policy statement from the American Heart Association" (Circulation: Heart Failure, 2013), "Red cell distribution width as a novel prognostic marker in heart failure" (Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2007), "Frailty assessment in the cardiovascular care of older adults" (Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2014), and "2021 update to the 2017 ACC expert consensus decision pathway for optimization of heart failure treatment" (Journal of the American College of Cardiology, 2021). Recognized annually as a Top Doctor in 5280 Magazine since 2012, he is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (2020), Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, and Heart Failure Society of America, Immediate-Past Chair of the AHA Clinical Cardiology Council (2023-2025), and Associate Editor for Circulation: Heart Failure.
