L. Scott Levin, MD, FACS, FAOA, is the Paul B. Magnuson Professor of Bone and Joint Surgery and Professor of Plastic Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, within the field of Medicine. He served as Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Penn Medicine from 2009 to 2021, now holding the title of Chairman Emeritus, and is Medical Director of the Penn Musculoskeletal and Rheumatology Service Line. Levin directs the Hand Transplant Program at Penn Medicine and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, leads the reconstructive microsurgery team at CHOP, and heads the Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Program at Penn. An attending physician at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Pennsylvania Hospital, and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, his clinical practice focuses on surgery of the hand and upper extremity, reconstructive microsurgical techniques for extremity reconstruction and limb salvage, nerve injuries, bone infections, bone tumors, congenital hand deformities, upper extremity joint replacement, vascularized bone grafts, vascularized joint transfers, extremity soft tissue reconstruction, microvascular surgery, and orthoplastic surgery, a field he developed.
Levin received his BS in Zoology from Duke University in 1977 and MD from Temple University School of Medicine in 1982. He completed internships and residencies in general and thoracic surgery, orthopaedic surgery as chief resident, and plastic, reconstructive, maxillofacial, and oral surgery at Duke University Medical Center, with fellowships in hand and microvascular surgery at the Christine Kleinert Institute and Duke Orthopaedic. He holds board certifications from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (1993, recertified 2024), American Board of Plastic Surgery (1993), and Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery (1994). Previously chief of the Division of Plastic, Reconstructive, Maxillofacial, and Oral Surgery and professor of surgery at Duke University, Levin has authored over 400 peer-reviewed journal articles, 85 book chapters, and edited 11 books, including Reconstructive Surgery of the Hand and Upper Extremity (2018), Hand Transplantation (2014), and Soft Tissue Reconstruction (2014). He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Orthoplastic Surgery, Deputy Editor for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery Upper Extremity Section, and Associate Editor for Annals of Plastic Surgery and Journal of Hand Surgery. His honors include the AAOS Kappa Delta Award, Academy of Master Surgeon Educators (ACS, 2018), Sir John Charnley Award (2013), Andrew J. Weiland Medal (2015), I.S. Ravdin Master Clinician Award (2014), and multiple traveling fellowships such as Bunnell (1999-2000), American Orthopaedic Association ABC (1995), and North American (1990). Levin pioneered advancements in hand transplantation, leading the first bilateral pediatric hand transplant.
